Funded Research Grants

      • Principal investigator (PI): the Italian-Egyptian Bilateral Project “Archaeological Egyptian Heritage and Materials: advances in noninvasive portable spectroscopy and imaging analysis” (2013-2015) within the executive programme of scientific and technological cooperation between the Italian republic and the Arab republic of Egypt. The project is in partnership between the Faculty of Archaeology (Fayoum University, Egypt) and Politecnico di Milano (Italy). For the purpose of scientific examination as part of conservation diagnostics, laboratory tools are necessary which are portable and non-invasive with application of novel portable spectroscopy and imaging devices for the analysis, monitoring and documentation of Egyptian archaeological materials. Devices selected for the project include luminescence time-resolved and spectrally-resolved imaging cameras, XRF and Raman spectrometers and visible multispectral camera, which provide an insight into material composition and conservation conditions of cultural heritage objects in a non-invasive way. They will be applied to the analysis of paintings, pigments and organic and inorganic objects from the Egyptian culture (manuscripts, icons, papyrus and wall paintings), considering model based samples, real museum objects and case studies of cultural heritage monuments or archaeological sites. The long-term output of the project would be to establish a Mobile Laboratory for the diagnosis of the threatened Egyptian Cultural Heritage and to enhance technological innovation in conservation research in Egypt by creating professional expertise in analysis of archaeological materials.
